Lionbyrd x 23 Beans

Rachel Jaffe (23 Beans) and Sarah Glaser (Lionbyrd) are proud descendants from four generations of Jewish Virginians. Their collaborative vessels celebrate Jewish traditions while illuminating their modern creative lives and family histories. Their ancestors' efforts speak to Jewish resilience and have a significant impact on their artistic process.

Shabbat Shalom, 2024

Shabbat is a weekly rededication to spiritual rest and renewal. On Friday nights at sunset, Jewish people welcome the sabbath by lighting the candles, drinking a glass of wine, and eating challah bread while reciting prayers of gratitude. We are asked to refrain from work activities, slow down, and embrace the spiritual aspects of life; imagining universal peace across humanity.

Buns of Affliction, 2025

Jewish peoples celebrate the holiday of Passover to commemorate their liberation from slavery in Egypt. On this day, we gather and eat foods that symbolically reference the story of our exile, one of which being the “bread of affliction” aka matzah. Matzah is a flat bread that we eat; a reminder of how those Jews fled so abruptly that they did not have time to let their bread rise.

Together, we blend our love for Jewish culture and pop ‘assthetics’ bringing a cheeky side to the narrative.
